Kelli is of Waitaha, Ngāti Rārua Ātiawa, Taranaki and Ngāti Maniapoto descent. Kelli holds a Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Arts, Postgraduate Certificate in Child Advocacy, Certificate of Professional Studies, Bachelor of Education, Diploma Primary Teaching and Diploma in Tertiary Education.

At Otago Polytechnic Kelli works in the College of Work Based Learning, Capable NZ, as Te Kaihautū: Te Kāhui Whetū / Capable Māori lead for undergraduate iwi cohorts and postgraduate mentoring. She is a member of Te Pūkenga Rangahau Māori Forum and Co-Secretary General for Asia-Pacific Peace Research Association (APPRA). Kelli's research interests are: Indigenous peace traditions, Decolonising methodologies, kaupapa Māori, Māori education, and Peace and social justice.
