Kelli is of Waitaha, Kāti Māmoe, Ngāti Rārua Ātiawa, and Taranaki descent. Kelli holds a Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Arts, Postgraduate Certificate in Child Advocacy, Certificate of Professional Studies, Bachelor of Education, Diploma Primary Teaching and Diploma in Tertiary Education.

At Otago Polytechnic Kelli works in the College of Work Based Learning, Capable NZ, as the Kaihtuatū: Te Kāhuii Whetū / Capable Māori lead for undergraduate iwi cohorts and mentoring postgraduate ākonga. She is a member of Te Pūkenga Rangahau Māori Forum. Kelli's research interests are: Indigenous peace traditions, Decolonising methodologies, kaupapa Māori, Māori education, and Peace and social justice.
