Ukrainian graduate Olha Viazenko began hosting a new radio show this week, bringing a slice of her home country to New Zealand.
The show is called Borsch Club. Borsch is a traditional Ukrainian soup dish, as well as a symbol of Ukrainian heritage and identity.
“It is a dish that brings people together, often shared during family gatherings. It is a dish we most likely cook when expecting guests. Beyond its delicious taste, borsch represents warmth, hospitality, and the vibrant cultural diversity of Ukraine,” says Olha.
The new show airs once a fortnight on OAR FM Dunedin and allows listeners to immerse themselves in Ukrainian culture and stories.
“From traditions and history to modern life, this show is your ultimate ticket to all things Ukraine,” says Olha.
The first show aired this week setting the foundation for exploring Ukraine’s past, present, and future, offering an understanding of key historical events and the context behind the current war with Russia.
As the show progresses it will uncover the essence of a resilient nation and its enduring spirit through stories and inspiring tales.
Olha says it’s primarily a show for locals who might not know much about Ukraine or only have limited knowledge.
“My goal is not just to talk about the war but also to showcase the beauty of Ukraine, its ancient culture, rich traditions, and the incredible achievements of Ukrainians worldwide.”
Olha came to New Zealand in 2018 to complete a Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Management with OPAIC.
She now works as an Events Adviser for the Dunedin City Council. Her responsibilities include organising city and community events as well as managing city activations. Olha is also a member of the Ukrainian Association of New Zealand.
Back home in Ukraine, Olha worked as a journalist and a lawyer. She’s also led an international relations organisation undertaking media projects and events with cultural societies and embassies all over the world.
