Otago Polytechnic treats food scraps ,coffee grounds ,lawn clippings ,annual weeds and any plant pruning as resources that are repurposed into a nutrient rich compost. In 2024 14 cubic meters of compost was made on campus and returned to the edible and ornamental gardens on our Living Campus. It is bizarre that 300,000 tonnes of food scraps is produced annually in NZ and most of it still goes to landfill?! But not at Otago Polytechnic.
The Living Campus team uses facilities at our L block permaculture garden and the Wormoporium / Pōpopo located on Union Street East next to S block to layer green organic material with woodchips and a tried and true recipe to hot compost everything we can lay our hands on. Oh and please let us show you our worms!
Meet Liam Hoffman at Pōpopo on Friday May 9 from 12.15 - 12.45 if you would like to learn more about the composting systems ,planning a workshop or volunteering. Otago Polytechnic supports International Compost Awareness Week.
