Graduate pays mentorship forward

Matilda Garnett was originally planning a career in Construction, until a holiday job working at a kids’ summer camp inspired her to pursue a Bachelor of Social Services at Otago Polytechnic. 

Like all Pasifika ākonga at OP, Matilda had the support of a Pasifika mentor for the first six weeks of study to help her settle into student life. 

“My Pasifika mentor helped me feel a sense of connection and a sense of community at OP. It was nice to have a familiar face in amongst the hustle and bustle of campus.” 

In her second and third years of study, Matilda became a Pasifika mentor herself and was able to be that supportive presence for others. She must have impressed in the role as, after graduation, Matilda was offered a position in the Pasifika team at Student Success. 

Born and raised in Dunedin, Matilda enjoys helping people in her role at OP. As a Pasifika Student Advisor, she works to support Pasifika students in every part of their polytechnic journey, whether that’s through staying connected to their culture, doing well in their studies, looking after their wellbeing or planning for their future career.  

“We want to see our students succeed while staying grounded in their Pasifika identity. As Pacific Islanders, we know it takes a village to succeed, which is why we focus on creating a close-knit community environment.” 

Matilda helps provide a range of supports for Pasifika students, starting even before they begin their studies. 

“I love getting to see students make their way through their entire study journey, from arrival to graduation. Our Pasifika Pre-Graduation ceremonies are always very special.”  

She has also needed to brush up on her culinary skills in the job – the team hosts hot lunches in the Pasifika Room on Thursdays, which can attract 80-100 students.  

“It’s a cool way for the students to connect with each other. They also get to spend time with us as Pasifika Advisors and get know who we are, so they can feel comfortable coming to us for a chat, advice or support.”
