Construction on this Dunedin City Council project started in January and is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

What is this project?

The project aims to improve the safety of people moving along and across Albany Street.

It will provide safe and attractive connections between Dunedin’s tertiary area, the central business district and the Harbour Shared Path (Te Aka Ōtākou).

Isaac Construction will complete this work.

Where will they work first?

Work will begin at the intersection of Anzac Avenue and Minerva Street. At the same time, you may see some minor traffic management for investigations and surveying along the project site.

Work will then take place in sections along Albany Street between Great King Street and Anzac Avenue.

What are they doing?

Along with resealing the road, the DCC will make:

  • more pedestrian crossings on Albany Street and Anzac Avenue
  • raised crossings across side streets off Albany Street
  • improved bus stops on Albany Street
  • a new two-way, separated cycleway on part of Albany Street between Cumberland Street and Anzac Avenue
  • a shared path on Albany Street between the SH1 pair, and on parts of Anzac Avenue and Minerva Street
  • parking changes, including new mobility carparks, parking restriction changes, new paid parking, spaces reduced on the northern side of Albany Street and parking spaces added to new one-way streets
  • parts of Riego and Clyde Streets one-way, exiting only from Forth Street to Albany Street heading north, with a turning circle to enable two-way traffic on Forth Street.
