There was a sense of pride and anticipation on Tuesday morning as a large crowd gathered for the opening and blessing of Otago Polytechnic’s newly renovated Pasifika learner space in A block.
The larger room (A115) was refurbished in response to the growing number of Pasifika learners at the Dunedin campus, which saw the community outgrow its former G block home.
Litea Ikahihifo, Director of Pasifika Achievement, says the opening marks a huge milestone.
“It’s not only blessing the new Pasifika room, but also a reminder of Otago Polytechnic’s collective commitment to uplift and support our Pasifika learners and wider communities."

“This space has been shaped with purpose. It’s a place for our Pasifika learners to study, relax, have weekly lunches together, and provides a home for programmes that bring our wider Pasifika communities together”, Litea says.
The ceremony brought together mana whenua, members of the Pasifika community, kaimahi, Pasifika mentors, and ākonga including those on the He Toki programme.
Chaplain Steve Downey and Māori Chaplain Te Ata Roy led the blessing of the new Pasifika room, and OPSA President Daiiz Rongo offered a Cook Island karakia, adding cultural richness and unity to the event.

The expanded room features new cooking facilities and a more flexible layout, making it a welcoming environment for parents and adaptable for future community initiatives.
Its design reflects the Polytechnic’s strategic focus on providing spaces where learners feel grounded, supported, and at home.
Litea also acknowledged the dedication of Pasifika Advisors Matilda Garnett and Fa’ao’o Tofilau Lui, whose steadfast commitment has played a key role in creating a space where Pasifika learners can thrive both academically and culturally.
