This week, we welcomed 11 ākonga from ICT Kanazawa to Otago Polytechnic. They will spend one year with us studying the New Zealand Certificate in English for Engineering Level 5, before returning to Japan to complete their programme.
Alongside their studies, the ākonga will take part in our cultural immersion programme, giving them the chance to experience life in Dunedin and connect with our community. If you see them on campus, please feel free to say kia ora and help make them feel welcome.
Below is a message from a former student, which I found quite touching:
“While studying abroad, you may at times feel discouraged because of the differences from Japan—your own mistakes, eating habits, or the different sense of time. But in such moments, I hope you will try to notice the good things within those differences. You will likely come to appreciate the open and friendly atmosphere, as well as the slightly laid‑back nature of the environment, which are unique strengths compared to Japan. When you can recognize Japan’s good qualities while also discovering the charm of New Zealand, your study abroad experience will become even more enjoyable. People there are very accustomed to international students and are incredibly friendly, so I encourage you to take that first step.”
