28-year old Wendy Jarnet, originally from Thames, has always had an interest in animals.

She initially studied a Veterinary Nursing Certificate at Otago Polytechnic but through her work experience working in a companion animal vet clinic she became keen to learn about rural animals too. This prompted her to return to Otago Polytechnic and study the Rural Animal Certificate at Level 5.

“Having previously studied at Otago Polytechnic I knew that I liked the way the programmes are delivered. Plus being able to study via distance was a big incentive as it allowed me to continue to work and support my family while still gaining a nationally recognised qualification.”

Wendy cites the work placements as being the best bit of her study experience. “I got to work with horses, cows, sheep, goats, donkeys, ostriches, alpaca, llama, chickens and deer! I had to work my butt off, but it was so worthwhile and has opened up so many doors career-wise.”

Indeed it has opened doors for Wendy.

She has since written journal articles, completed her Veterinary Nursing Diploma through Otago Polytechnic, been nominated by her workplace for New Zealand Vet Nurse of the Year Award 2014, and is currently working towards a Veterinary Technician Specialist Certification in Emergency and Critical Care through the United States. She is also upskilling to become a lecturer in her field.

All of this is a huge undertaking but Wendy is more than up for the challenge.

“If I can do it, anyone can,” says Wendy.
