Driven to make a difference

After attending polytechnic and university open days, Jess Faulks decided on Nursing – the area she felt she could be of the greatest help to others.

The people that I have met through nursing are truly amazing. The bonds I have formed with people over the past 2 years are relationships I will treasure for life. Everyone in the School of Nursing wants you to achieve so I feel very supported.

Jess enrolled in Nursing at Otago Polytechnic and is loving the study experience – especially the many practical opportunities.

“Going out on placement to various settings has always been a highlight for me. I like that we are able to get a first-hand experience of what our future in the career can be like. It helps you develop your scope of practice more than a textbook ever could and gives you confidence in your abilities.”

This year Jess represented New Zealand in touch rugby, and, by organising herself well, successfully manages both her study and sport commitments.

“The nursing school understands the importance of a good life balance and for this reason, the degree allows me to continue to play competitive sport around the world.”

“Playing international test matches is a feeling like no other. A mixture of nerves, excitement, and pride is always around prior to the game. However, once the first whistle goes the nerves go flying out the window and my competitive streak kicks in.”

Jess recommends others considering nursing should grasp every opportunity.

“Put your fear of failing aside and have the confidence to trust in your learning.”
