A definition of preceptorship

An experienced RN (preceptor), orienting new nursing staff and students (preceptee) on a one to one basis through teaching, coaching, supervising and role modeling. The preceptor works in partnership with a new staff member or student in order to assist and support them in the learning process and adapt to their new role. They are then responsible for the learning experience of the preceptee over a specified period. They may delegate learning experiences to another person or buddy but they are responsible for the preceptee and for mentoring, setting goals, appraising their work performance and addressing issues that may arise. The preceptee is also able to appraise and evaluate the preceptor’s ability and support given them. This also applies in the Dedicated Education Unit process.
