BN500002 - Nursing Practice 1

Aim

This course enables learners to develop and demonstrate nursing practice skills across the lifespan in a range of health care settings.


Learning Outcomes

In the document Competencies for registered nurses, Nursing Council of New Zealand requires that “nursing students are assessed against all competencies on an on-going basis” (2022, p.7).

Using as headings the four domains of the Competencies for registered nurses (Nursing Council of New Zealand 2022) the following outcomes will be met when the student successfully completes this course in a clinical setting.

At the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Domain One: Professional Responsibility

  1. Demonstrate professional behaviour at all times.
  2. Apply safe, sustainable, legal and ethical practice.
  3. Apply the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi to nursing practice.
  4. Demonstrate culturally safe practice as determined by the health consumer.

Domain Two: Management of Nursing Care

  1. Utilise appropriate frameworks for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care.
  2. Demonstrate clear, concise, timely and accurate documentation.
  3. Apply reflective processes to develop practice.
  4. Provide appropriate health education to the health consumer.

Domain Three: Interpersonal Relationships

  1. Initiate, maintain and conclude effective therapeutic relationships in partnership with health consumers.

Domain Four: Interprofessional Health Care and Quality Improvement

  1. Identify the contributions of other health professionals and community resources in supporting health consumers
